Bonsai is the art of cultivating ornamental varieties of trees and shrubs that are artificially dwarfed and grown in trays or shallow pots.
The plants are trained by wiring to enhance their shape and their roots are pruned to regulate their growth. Bonsai are easy to grow providing they have sufficient water, good natural light and plenty of fresh air. Your Bonsai depends entirely on you for its well being. Here is some information to help you enjoy your Bonsai even more.
Important Information
Your Bonsai is not an indoor plant and it needs to spend most ofits life outdoors. Bonsais thrive outdoors loving the sun, the rain, cool night air and morning dew. Ideally, your Bonsai would enjoy sitting on a table or a bench in the garden where it could receive light shade, perhaps from a tree, to protect it from the hot afternoon sun. A balcony or verandah would also be a good place for your bonsai as long as it is not in a position where it receives reflected heat from walls or tiles, particularly in summer. Another good spot for a Bonsai would be a windowsill or a table close to an open window.
Of course you will want to show off your Bonsai for special occasions and a healthy Bonsai will not mind spending a day or so inside on display. Remember that Bonsai plants like the night air, so if you do bring your plant inside occasionally, make sure it goes outside in the evenings.

For best results, regular watering is required
In Queensland, watering is required every day and sometimes twice a day in summer. In winter, depending on thesize of the plant, watering every second day should be adequate. Thepotting mix around your Bonsai plant should not be kept constantly wet, nor should it ever be allowed to completely dry out. If your Bonsai is not a position where it can receive regular watering, the best way to ensure adequate moisture levels is by immersion. Immerse the Bonsai in its pot in water for about thee to five minutes, or until the soil is completely wet. Then do not water again until the soil is beginning todry out and it feels only slightly damp to the touch.
If you are going away, you should arrange for someone to regularly water your plant for you.

Maintenance
Your Bonsai will need ongoing maintenance. How much depends on the age of the plant and the particular variety. In general, some root pruning and replacement of potting mix is required approximately every twelve months.
For sub-tropical species such as figs, maintenance work is done during the warm months of summer from November to February. Maintenance on other trees can be carried out in late winter or early spring from late July through August. Be observant and watch the leaf buds. The ideal time tore-pot deciduous and evergreen treesis when the leaf buds are fat and plump, but before they actually open.
You may choose to let the experts repot and prune your plant. A fee is charged for this service and it can be arranged through Hawkins Home & Garden Centres.
