Container Gardening

The use of pots in gardens goes back many centuries. They were found in Italian, French and Spanish gardens and conservatories usually growing rare plants and sculptured trees (topiaries) in the beautiful gardens of their era.

Today container gardening is more popular than ever with the backyard shrinking and many people living in units and townhouses with very small courtyards. With containder gardening you are still able to have your favourite plants herbs or vegies at your fingertips.

Terracotta pots are still very popular and we carry a huge range. Glazed pot are popular because of the fantastic colours, white and very neutral colours are the most sought after. Mainly because pots usually last many years and neutral colours will most likely suit your surroundings.

John Hawkins Top Tips For Container Gardening

  • When selecting your pot for container gardening, try to select oversize containers as your plants will continue to grow inside your pot.
  • When selecting a potting mix, remember you only get what you pay for. Cheap mixes will not do the job your plants totally rely on what you give them to grow well.
  • Use water retaining crystals in your potting mix as plants can easily dry out quickly, especially in the hot summer months.
  • Ferterlize at least once a month with a good organic fertilizer.
  • When planting add some 6-12 months pellet fertilizer.
  • When you are selecting your plants, check the three main catagories, full sun, part shade and full shade as your growing environment and match with our suggested growing list of the best container growing plants.
